Exploring Color: A Watercolor Workshop
This watercolor workshop is an introduction and exploration designed for adults of all artistic abilities. When the wet brush touches the dry paper, the form is done, the commitment has been made and you're not in complete control. You learn how to play with "accidents" and enjoy the process. Colors bleed into each other and beautiful unexpected colors emerge and meander – this unpredictable behavior gives rise to exploration and play. Supply list will be emailed in advance, space is limited! Detail of watercolor butterflies by Marika Hahn, instructor. (more)REGISTER

Printmaking without a Press: Creative Linocuts
Relief printing is the oldest form of printmaking, and the modern material of linoleum makes it incredibly easy to practice this ancient art, effortlessly yielding elegant, fluid lines. Ever popular for their directness of approach and bold graphic quality, linocuts also have the advantage that they don't require a printing press. In this workshop we'll cover all stages of the linocut process-image transfer, carving, inking, registration and printing. We'll be working with two different linoleum blocks to create two-color images, while experimenting with multiple color combinations. Detail of linocut by Eva Nikolova, Instructor. (more)REGISTER

Printmaking without a Press: The Expanded Monotype
Ideal for those without access to a press or printmaking facility, this workshop takes a mixed-media approach to monotype-the most immediate of all the printmaking processes. You'll discover numerous image-making methods that can all be recreated in your home studio or apartment to yield a great variety of effects/results. We will work both additively and subtractively, exploring color mixing and varied mark-making tools. We will also learn how to make a trace monotype and try out different hand-printing tools. Working with stencils, stamps, collage, and shaped foamprint plates will allow us to create complex layered prints, while exploring color inkjet and black & white laser/Xerox transfer techniques will permit us to incorporate found imagery. All materials are non-toxic and all levels are welcome. Trace monotype by Eva Nicolova, Instructor. (more)REGISTER

Camera-less Photography without a Darkroom: The Chemigram
A unique and rare alternative photo process, Chemigrams quickly and easily yield results that are as singular as they are spectacular even for the beginner. More related in method and approach to painting and printmaking than to photography, Chemigrams use no camera or darkroom. We'll be working in ambient light with darkroom chemicals on black & white photo paper to create subtly colored prints, using a variety of resists, from simple household ingredients like honey and glue, to specialized formulas. We'll also explore hand-coloring methods. At the end of the workshop, you'll take home a multitude of abstract and figurative images, that range from simple and striking to intricate and complex. No prior photo, printmaking or painting experience is required. Just bring your imagination and be prepared to experiment and play. Close up of a Chemigram by Eva Nikolova, Instructor. (more)REGISTER
